Taming the new consultant
This often happens when a specialist comes from outside of the country, he often comes as fresh, new blood, eager to serve,
His favourite phrase is : When I was in US
Here comes the new local workgroup or lobbies in the department, wants him to join, or being classified as loner. Or at least to adapt their workstyle instead of high standards he used to.
For example they want him to use shorter reporting style. To refuse patients, or the tools that he used to use are unavailable.
There should be a mindshift for the new consultant, where he is being asked to skew from his standards into lower ones.
The mindshift starts by speaking out, by creating a community, a multidisplinary team like he used to attend their meetings.
Downslide starts when he starts to attack local community, hospital admin, or people in general because they could not support him as before, his payment isnt as fulfilling, and perks of being a doctor isnt that bright anymore.
I watched new consultants thriving in some envirnoments because they new how to adapt, and others slid into darkness and even left the field, which is sad thing to witness.
The shift requires mindset change. To focus on the infrastructure, to create a post for what you think is needed to advance your field forward. New challanges to overcome in the lack of financial support or emotional or anykind of which you used to in more developed place.
Peace out
